Castlebar Concert & Marching Band in Straide Church, December 8th

Posted by:

Straide Parishioners were delighted to welcome the Castlebar Concert and Marching Band to Straide Church on Sunday, December 8th (the Feast of the Immaculate Conception) to play during Mass. What a treat it was on one of the most important Feast Days in the annual Church calendar. The band played a medley of hymns and carols. A very moving Fanfare during the Consecration was performed by Straide parishioner Karen Hynes. A most beautiful and moving three part harmony version of “O Holy Night” was performed by parishioners Karen & Dervilla Hynes, accompanied by John O’Donnell from Castlebar.

The band has been in existence since the early 1920s, albeit under different names at times. It comprises of dedicated and committed members who always have the wellbeing and interest of the Band at heart. Members come from Castlebar, Castlebar, Foxford and Straide and range in age from teenagers to adults, including a number of active retired people. Three parishioners of Straide are members of the band – Declan, Karen and Dervilla Hynes.

Under the leadership of Jackie Graham, M.D. the band is one of the few remaining working bands in the County of Mayo and the Province of Connaught. It is an integral part of the local community, and participates regularly at many local events, including parades, civic events, sports fixtures, local festivals, street carols, church services, as well as its own Annual Concert.

The Organisation covers a wide variety of music, including classical, historic marches, jazz, swing, and arrangements from more contemporary popular genres. Several musical instruments make up the rich sound, including brass instruments- trumpets and euphoniums, or woodwind – flute and clarinet.

The band practices every Tuesday evening from 8pm to 9.30pm in St. Patrick’s National School – for the duration of the school year, and it is always welcoming to new members.

Musical Instrument classes are on offer at the School every Saturday, from 9.30am to 2pm and cater for the needs of children and adults alike.
Castlebar Concert and Marching Band is affiliated to Mayo Concert Orchestra and Mayo Youth Orchestra.
