Sixth Class Graduation 2012

Ss Peter & Paul National School ended the school year with a Mass of Thanksgiving on June 17th. It was a particularly moving occasion for the students in Sixth Class as well as for their parents and teachers. We wish Clodagh, Helena, Katie, Ruth, Shania and Shauna the very best of luck as they begin their second level education in late August.

After Mass the students, parents and staff had a celebration in the Davitt Hall.

Fr. Dermot’s Retirement

June 8th 2012 was a Big Day in the calendar of Straide Parish Community. The parish marked the retirement of Fr. Dermot Burns who had served 17 years as Parish Priest of Straide. The day began with a Mass of Thanksgiving celebrated by Fr. Dermot’s successor, Fr. Martin Convey. The guest preacher was a long time friend and fellow Ballaghaderreen priest, Fr. Tommy Towey.

After Mass there was a very large and fabulous reception in the Welcome Inn in Castlebar. The huge turnout of family, friends and parishioners at both the Mass and the reception in Castlebar was indicative of  how highly regarded Fr. Dermot is in the community.

Presentations were made to Fr. Dermot on behalf of the Parish and the Board of Management of the Primary School. The occasion was also used to mark the work of the parishioners of Straide in the absence of Fr. Dermot due to illness – especially Brigid Cogger, Mary Raoche and Mary Byrne.

Fr. Dermot is wished well in his retirement which he has chosen to spend in Straide, an indication of the great affection he holds for its people.

2nd Annual Straide Fun Day 2012

The 2nd Annual Straide Fun Day / Spraoi na Sráidewas was another great success for the local community of the historic and beautiful village of Straide. Organised by Straide Community Development Group, many volunteers were involved making it a truly community event. Despite the changeable weather on the day, Sunday 12 August, there was a great turn out.

The day was packed full of events, for all ages and interests; young and old, sports people, bakers, dancers and those meeting neighbours and friends. The events were low tech but extra high on enjoyment and participation.

The Potato Picking contest became extremely competitive at times! Entrants strained to be the first to pick their spuds and fill their basket. The sheaf throwing competition separated ‘the chaff from the wheat’ with those used to the work throwing well above the average. The children’s’ races, javelin and wellie throwing competitions were well supported along with the other novelty events.

A highlight of the day was the ‘Cake of the Parish Competition’, The competition, sponsored by O’Hara’s Bakery of Foxford. Was extremely well supported. Bogdan Kasperek, Master Baker from the Bakery gave very careful consideration to all the entries. It was with great difficulty that he awarded the beautiful winning trophies in the various adult and youth categories. All the entrants then donated their cakes, buns and bread for sale.

The day was completed in the Davitt Community Hall with music and dancing. Gina Laffey and Hugh Rainey get special mention for their elegant performances.

The organisers were delighted the day went so well. They were keen to organise a fun day at low cost for all the community to come together and enjoy. They definitely succeeded in that! ‘The day would not have been possible without the help and support of many – volunteers who kept the road safe, served in the tea and cake tent, organised the games, provided face painting for children (and a few adults). Special thanks is given to Mayo Civil Defence, Mayo County Council and O’Hara’s Bakery for their assistance’.

We look forward to what Straide will offer in the 3rd Annual Straide Spraoi in 2013 – the year of the Gathering!
