The year 2016 was a very historic one for this country, which celebrated the centenary of the Easter Rising of 1916, as well as other notable events from World War I. As it turned out, the year 2016 was also a very important one for the community of Straide in Co. Mayo which had many local anniversaries and events to commemorate and celebrate during the course of the year.
These included:
- 100th Anniversary of the opening of the Parish Church of Ss. Peter & Paul
- The Commemoration of Straide’s War Dead (1914 – 2016)
- 100th Anniversary of the last Mass being celebrated in the Old Penal Church
- 110th Anniversary of the death of Michael Davitt
- 135th Anniversary of the Establishment of the Ladies Land League – Anne Deane (its first President) is buried in Straide Abbey
- 220th Anniversary of the building of Moore Hall on the shores of Lough Carra by George Moore, whose family hailed from Straide
- 425 years since the death of Tadgh Dall O’Huigínn (also known as the Matchstick Man of Straide or the Bard of Straide)
- 765th Anniversary of Straide Abbey
- 775th Anniversary of Ballylahan Castle
Throughout 2016 historic Straide commemorated and celebrated these anniversaries in a truly appropriate fashion. This magazine gives some background historical information on the original events, as well as capturing moments from the celebrations of their anniversaries.
